PROJECT overview
Humans and coyotes (Canis latrans) are living side by side in Edmonton. If you ask anyone who has grown up in Edmonton, they will have a coyote story of some sorts, whether it be their own experience or the experience of a friend or family member. Many Edmontonians find living with charismatic wild carnivores rewarding, but coexistence with these top urban predators also presents inherent risks to people and their pets.
To understand how humans and coyotes are interacting across the city, the Edmonton Urban Coyote Project has collected eight years worth of public reports of coyote sightings (no perceived interaction) and encounters (perceived human-coyote interactions). We hope to use this data to determine when and where humans and coyotes are co-occurring in Edmonton, and whether coyotes encounters have increased over time. Our goal is to inform both the general public and wildlife managers to facilitate human-coyote coexistence in Edmonton.
